Whether you're a music producer with a studio for hire, a mastering engineer, or a post-production professional crafting sound for TV and motion pictures, Waves plugins can help you process audio files with a range of filters, effects and specialized tools, including software emulations of famous audio hardware. If you invest in a license for a Macintosh bundle that features varied processing tools or for a single plug-in for a native DAW, Waves products require a combined installation and authorization procedure before you can use them in your studio.

1.

Create a Waves Account if you don't already have one (see Resources). Waves makes the application available as an online form. Along with your contact information, desired login name and password, and the specifics of your DAW host computer, you'll need to list your audio hardware and host applications. Until Waves emails you an activation link and you use it to finalize your account, you cannot complete the authorization portion of the installation process.

2.

Download your software from the Waves website. Launch the product installer and select the items for which you've purchased licenses, either individual plugins or a plugin bundle.

3.

Open your 'Applications' folder, locate the Waves folder within it, and double-click on it to open it. Open the 'Applications' folder within the Waves folder and launch the Waves License Center application. If you wish to create an authorization on a flash drive, plug it in to an open USB port on your Mac. If you authorize a USB flash drive, you can use your authorizations on another computer.

4.

Log in to the Waves License Center through the WLC application. Your Waves account information serves as your login details. In the list under My License Cloud, click on the check box in front of the name of each plug-in or package you're authorizing. Listings for bundles display a '+' that reveals a list of the plugins in the specific bundle. To select all your pending products, click on the check box in front of 'My License Cloud.'

Click on your desired licensing destination -- either your computer or a USB flash drive -- in the Select Destination list on the right side of the WLC screen. Click on the 'Send Licenses' button to complete the process. The Waves License Center displays a message indicating that it sent your licenses successfully.

Tips

  • If your DAW host computer lacks an Internet connection, log in to your Waves account on another computer and download the Waves License Center installer so you can authorize your DAW. Waves recommends establishing a temporary Internet connection on your DAW to minimize the amount of data you must download to complete the installation and authorization process.
  • To authorize a computer that doesn't have an Internet connection, you must use a USB flash drive to hold your licenses. If you want to use your authorizations on Windows-based DAWs as well as on your Mac, plug in your thumb drive. Select the drive in the Finder, press 'Cmd-I' to open a Get Info window, and check the file system on the flash drive to verify that it uses the FAT32 format. If you haven't reformatted the drive to use on your Mac, it probably shipped as a FAT32 storage medium.
  • To transfer ownership of Waves plugins, your software must be covered by a paid Waves Update Plan, which covers updates and support for one year. The company also charges a fee -- $150 as of July 2012 -- for the license transfer.
  • You can reformat a thumb drive in FAT32 format using the Disk Utility application within the Utilities folder of your Applications folder.
