This document provides instructions for installing SPSS on Mac and Windows machines.

Installing SPSS 24,23,22, or 21 for Windows and Mac Operating Systems

Requirements (for all Operating Systems) in order to Begin Installation Process
  • A user account with full administrator privileges
  • A computer running Windows, Mac, or Linux Operating Systems
  • A copy of the SPSS 24 installation file (downloaded from the Campus Software Library)
  • At least 2GB of hard drive space free for the install.
Installation Procedure SPSS 23,22, or 21 (Windows)
  1. Start Windows (Boot up the computer)
  2. Locate the SPSS zip file that you downloaded from the Campus Software Library. It should like something like this:

  3. Right click on this file and select the 'Extract All' option.

  4. A window will then pop up and ask you to choose an extraction location. Choose the location to be the same one that the zip file is stored.
  5. Once the extraction is complete, you will see that another file with the same name as the zip file has been created, except this file is not a zip file but rather a folder.
  6. Open this folder, and scroll down through the listed files until you see a file named 'setup.exe'.

  7. Double click on this file to open the installation wizard.
  8. On the first screen that pops up, click the next button.

  9. On the next screen, choose the 'Authorized user license' option, and then click the next button.

  10. On the next screen, accept the terms in the license agreement, and click the next button.
  11. Fill out the two 'Username' and 'Organization' fields with your NetID and The University of Wisconsin Madison, respectively. Then click the next button.

  12. Choose any additional language packs you would like to use (if any), and then click the next button.
  13. Choose the 'No' option under the 'Do you need JAWS for Windows screen reading software enabled for IBM SPSS Statistics?', unless you require accessibility assistance using that type of screen reader. If you do not know what this is, then choose 'No'.

  14. Choose the 'Yes' or 'No' option under 'Install IBM SPSS Statistics - Essentials for Python' depending on whether or not you will be using SPSS along with Python on your computer. Then click the next button.
  15. Accept the terms in the license agreement, and click the next button.
  16. Accept the terms in the second license agreement, and click the next button.
  17. Leave the default install location as is, and click the next button.

  18. Finally, click the install button to install the program.
  19. Once the installation is complete, click the OK button to proceed to the license authorization process.

  20. Choose the first option that says 'License my product now', and then click the next button.

  21. Enter the authorization code in the 'Enter Code:' field that was provided to you in the SPSS related email you received. Then click the next button.
  22. You have now installed and properly licensed SPSS on your Windows Machine.
  1. Start Windows (Boot up the computer).
  2. Locate the SPSS_Statistics_24_win64[32].exe file, and double click on it to open it.

  3. A User Account Control window will then pop up. Click the yes button.

  4. The installation process has now begun. Click the next button to continue.

  5. Accept the terms in the license agreement, and then click the next button.
  6. Choose the 'Yes' or 'No' option under 'Install IBM SPSS Statistics - Essentials for Python' depending on whether or not you will be using SPSS along with Python on your computer. Then click the next button.
  7. Accept the terms in the license agreement, and then click the next button.
  8. Accept the terms in the second license agreement, and then click the next button.
  9. Leave the destination install folder as is, and then click the next button.

  10. Finally, click the install button to begin the actual installation of the program.
  11. Once the installation has completed, make sure that the checkbox to open the program afterwards is checked, and then click the 'Finish' button. The program has now successfully installed on your computer. The next step is then to license it.
  12. Two windows should then appear after you have clicked the finish button, one of which looks like this:

  13. Click on the 'License Product' button in the middle.
  14. The License Status window should then appear. Click the next button to continue.

  15. Choose the 'Authorized User License' option, and then click the next button.

  16. In the 'Enter Code:' text box, enter the authorization code given to you in the SPSS related email you received.

  17. You have now successfully installed and properly licensed your copy of SPSS on Windows.
Installation Procedure SPSS 24,23,22,21 (Mac)
  1. Locate the 'SPSS_Statistics_25_mac.dmg' file that you downloaded from the Campus Software Library.

  2. Double click on this file to mount it, and then double click on the installer icon that will pop up in the new window below.

  3. A warning message may pop up that says 'This is an application downloaded from the Internet. Are you sure you want to open it?' Click on the open button, and then enter your Mac's username and password when prompted.
  4. Choose your language in the installer window that appears, and then click the next button.
  5. On the introduction window that appears, simply click the next button again.
  6. Now, skip to step #9 on the Installation Procedure SPSS 23,22, or 21 (Windows) at the top of this page. The installation instructions should be the same, although the order in which the windows appear may be a little different.

Install SPSS Statistics 24 or 25 (Windows)

Note: SPSS Statistics 24 and 25 for Windows use a streamlined installer. The installation process is much simpler than earlier versions of SPSS.

  9. Accept the terms of the license for SPSS Statistics and click .
  10. Choose an installation folder location. We recommend you choose the default location. Click .
  11. The installer will verify that the installation location has sufficient space to install. After it passes this check, click the button.The installer will take several minutes to run.
  12. When the installer has completed, click .
  13. IBM SPSS Statistics 24 (or 25) should then automatically launch. On the Registration screen, choose the second option and click the button.
  14. The SPSS License Authorization Wizard should launch, and display the License Status window. The windows should show a two-week trial license. Click .
  15. In the Product Authorization windows, choose your license type. If you are installing a standalone license of SPSS (most customers), choose the Authorized User License option. If your department uses a local SPSS license server to activate, choose the Concurrent User License. Click.
  16. Enter the SPSS Authorization Code you received at purchase. If you do not have your code, you can look it up online via the CU Software Online Store. For instructions on looking up your code, please see How to Look Up Your Software License Codes. After you have entered your code, click .
  17. The authorization window will attempt to authorize your copy of SPSS Statistics 24 or 25 over the Internet. If successful, it will display the message: Successfully processed all codes. Click .
  18. The Licensing Completed window should then show your product expiration date as the final date of the current license term. Click .

Your copy of SPSS Statistics 24 or 25 is installed and activated. It now should be ready for use.

Install SPSS Statistics 21, 22, or 23 (Windows)

Note: Installation instructions are identical for versions 21, 22, and 23, except for the names of the files; where the instructions say '23,' substitute the number of the version you're installing.

  1. Determine whether your version of Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit. If you are not sure, please check with your local IT provider.
  2. Download the installer archive to your computer's local hard drive. The installer will be in ZIP format. The filename will be SPSS_Statistics-v23-Win.zip.
  3. After download, right-click the installer file and select Extract All.
  4. After file extraction is complete, you should now see a new folder SPSS_Statistics-v23-Win. Open that folder.
  5. Inside that folder, find the SPSS installer appropriate to your version of Windows:
    • 64-bit systems: Double-click
    • 32-bit systems: Double-click
  6. The IBM SPSS InstallShileld Wizard should launch. It may take a moment to start, and you may need to give Windows permission to proceed.
  7. On the Welcome to IBM SPSS Statistics window, click the radio button, then click.
  8. Accept the license terms
  9. Enter the user name you want to use (your NetID would work), and Cornell Universityas the organization. Click.
  10. On the Help Language screen, add any additional languages. (English is always installed.) Click .
  11. On the Assistive Technology screen, select whether or not you wish to add JAWS screen reading software. Click .
  12. On the Essentials for Python screen, select whether or now you wish to add SPSS Python Essentials. Click .
  13. Accept the license terms. (Again). Click .
  14. Select the destination folder to install SPSS. We recommend that you use the default location. Click .
  15. Click to begin the installation. This can take 30-45 minutes to complete.
  16. When the installation is complete, you will be prompted to start the licensing authorization process. Click to begin this process.
  17. On the Product Authorization window, select the button next to License my product now. Click.
  18. Enter the authorization code you received in your SPSS order confirmation, then click. (If you don't have your code, you can retrieve it online by following these instructions.)
  19. If successful, the installer should report Successfully processed all codes. Click .
  20. Click. You have now completed the installation and license authorization for your new SPSS software.

Install SPSS Statistics (Mac)

Note 1: You must run the SPSS installer from a user account that has full Administrator rights on your Mac.

Note 2: The instructions for installing SPSS Statistics versions 21 through 24 are nearly identical to those for version 25. Screen names reflect the version you are installing, and some screens may appear in a different order.

  1. Download the appropriate installer disk image from the CU Software SPSS page. The file name will be SPSS_Statistics_25_mac.dmg.
  2. After download is complete, double-click the installer file. A disk image will appear called SPSSStatistics. Depending on your computer's settings, a Finder window of the same name will also open. If the window does not open by itself, double-click the disk image named above to open the window manually.
  3. In the SPSSStatistics window, double-click the icon .
  4. You may receive a warning, 'This is an application downloaded from the Internet. Are you sure you want to open it?' Click the button. You will then be prompted to enter your macOS administrator username and password. Please do so, and click to continue.
  5. You may be prompted to install a new Helper application. If you are, allow the installation and click .
  6. In the IBM SPSS Statistics installer window, select your language (English is default) and click to start the installation process.
  7. On the Introduction screen, click .
  8. On the License Type window, select the radio button, then click . (Note: If you are installing SPSS onto a machine that will be part of a local network/concurrent license, select the instead. You will need to have a local SPSS network license server running on your local area network to use this option. Check with your local network administrator for more details.)
  9. On the License Agreement screen, you must accept the terms of the license. Click .
  10. On the Customer Information screen, enter the user name you want to use (your NetID would work), and Cornell University as the organization. Click .
  11. On the Help Language screen, select any languages in addition to English that you would like the Help screens to display. Click .
  12. On the Python Essentials screen, choose whether or not you would like to add this SPSS extension. Click . You will also need to accept the terms of this additional license to proceed.
  13. On the Choose Install Folder window, select or create a folder to hold the installation. We strongly recommend that you choose the default location. Click .
  14. On the Pre-Installation Summary screen, review the options you chose and click . The installer will run for several minutes.
  15. When the setup wizard has finished, you should see the License screen. If you would like to receive e-mail updates about SPSS from IBM, check the box indicated on the screen. Click to proceed to license activation.
  16. On the Product Authorization window, click the button in the middle section of the screen. Click .
  17. Enter the authorization code you received in your SPSS order confirmation, then click . (If you don't have your code, you can retrieve it online by following these instructions.)
  18. If successful, the installer should report 'Successfully processed all codes.' Click .
  19. Click . You have now completed the installation and license the authorization of your new SPSS software.

Update License Code on Existing SPSS Installation

Windows

  1. In the Start menu, select .
  2. In your list of programs, you will see a folder called either SPSS or IBM SPSS Statistics. Open that folder.
  3. In that folder, you will see a program called either SPSS License Authorization Wizard or IBM SPSS Statistics License Authorization Wizard.
  4. Right-click the License Authorization Wizard icon, and select

  5. Log in to a Windows user account with full Administrator access rights. (If you do not have a Windows user account with full Administrator rights, please see your local system administrator or technical support provider.) The License Authorization Wizard should then launch.
  6. The wizard should display the License Status window, which shows the authorization status for all detected SPSS components. Click .
  7. On the Product Authorization window, select the button next to . Click .
  8. Enter the authorization code you received in your SPSS order confirmation, then click . (If you don't have your code, you can retrieve it online by following these instructions.)
  9. If successful, the installer should report 'Successfully processed all codes.' Click .
  10. Click . You have now completed the installation and license the authorization of your new SPSS software.

Macintosh

  1. In your Applications folder, you should see either an IBM folder or an SPSS folder. Open that folder.
  2. Inside that folder should be a folder called SPSS21, 22, 23, 24, or 25 (depending on your specific version). Open that folder.

A note about older versions of SPSS: IBM no longer supports versions of SPSS earlier than version 20, and is not releasing product codes for them. If you are using an older version of SPSS, you must upgrade to version 20 or later.
